26/09/19 - THEATRE OF VISUAL EFFECTS
Above is my outcome from the initial experiments from the Theatre of Visual Effects workshop today. Ana Carolina and I decided to create the silhouette of a deer, walking through a forest, to play into some sort of narrative in our experiments. We used a fishing wire pulled through two holes on the sides of the box to create the effect of the deer moving. For the materials in the box we used a piece of tracing paper at the front in order to diffuse the light. We tried firstly using a piece of acetate, however the tracing paper was more effective as it didn’t diffuse the light quite so much, allowing for a bit more contrast in the silhouette. We then place a circular mask made out of printer paper, to keep the focus on the deer and act as somewhat of a proscenium arch to stage the action of the short moving image clip. Behind the fishing wire we placed a piece of blue acetate, to spread the colour across the box, and create the effect that the action was taking place at nightfall. Finally, we had a piece of textured gauze material, to suggest ideas of nature and suggest that the deer was walking through the wilderness. Finally, after listening to Nicolas Lefaucheux’s ‘Information Music’ videos, we decided to add ‘Forest at Night’ sound effects with iMovie, to add further context to the moving image, and to elevate the narrative.
23/09/19 - POSTERS OUTCOME
This is my outcome for the posters project. I wanted the imagery to communicate the emotions in the text, with the female character being driven to insanity by the mundane, everyday objects from reality surrounding her. The typeface and black boxes create a typewriter effect, which ties in with the 60s imagery and makes the words stand out more. I chose a different typeface for the word 'insane' as I felt it had more depth, meaning and emotion in comparison to the formal tone of the other words. This design was created using the Adobe InDesign software.
22/09/19 - CORE DESIGN AND TYPOGRAPHY
These are a series of images that I created in response to my chosen text: “It is sometimes an appropriate response to reality to go insane.” The first image is an illustration created in Procreate, it depicts the scene of an empty apartment, and coming home to mundane reality, yet portrayed in bright psychedelic colours, playing into the idea of insanity. The style of the illustration was inspired by 1950s/60s Disney animation, such as Lady and the Tramp and Aristocats, as my initial inspirations for my poster began with mid-century graphic design, I focussed on the other movements within in this era. This is also seen in my second image which is in the style of a 1960s advertisement, with imagery associated with the text, also illustrated on Procreate. The objects from mundane reality swarm the subject, driving her to insanity. My third image depicts a sense of insanity, with the duplicated silhouette creating a sense of ‘alternating’ realities and is illustrated in a mid-century-modern graphic design style.
